You Should Take A Day Off.

A simple reflection as my sabbath begins

We are a society obsessed with work.

I don’t need complex statistics, psychological studies or a whole lot of evidence to make that point.

We are obsessed with work and with doing and doing, as if there’s going to be a time when it’s all done.

This is why I believe that the Jewish and Christian tradition of Sabbath are more important than ever. When the sun goes down on Friday evening, you stop. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, you stop.

This is because of a simple truth — you are more than your work. God is more important than His work. He just is. We are just His.

Refusing to toil endlessly declares Him as our maker and that as enough. It says that life and our worth exists far beyond the times crossed off our to do list or the goals accomplished.

I Sabbath not because I have to, but because I get to.
